Plagiarism Doesn't Pay

I'm a real square.

I have never smoked, snorted, or slammed illegal drugs; I've never stolen anything (at least not that I can remember, although my mom insists that I stole and ate a yellow onion while sitting in her grocery cart when I was 3); I've never cheated on an exam, in any school; and I've never plagiarized a paper.

Laura K. Pahl of Lewis University isn't as wholesome as I. This young woman (I'm assuming she's young) made the grave mistake of openly asking everyone within the reach of her instant messaging client to write a paper on something to do with the Hindu religion or culture.

Nate Kushner, who belongs to a sketch comedy group that calls itself A Week of Kindness, answered her plea and completely manufactured a very funny paper (including references to the Hindu god Chivas, mixing a little Scotch with his religion).

It's very entertaining, if mildly upsetting to think about what's going to happen to this girl - Kushner copied the entire 'paper' to his blog (to prove to her professor that the work is not original) and sent the URL to the president of Lewis University. I understand his desire to punish, and I possibly would have done the same thing. Having said that, Ms. Pahl is probably going to be suspended at least and expelled at most, and I belong to the school of second chances for just about everyone. I honestly think this 'one strike and you're out' intolerance that's becoming pervasive nowadays is making life so much harder than it needs to be. Everyone deserves a second chance, and to ruin a career that hasn't yet begun over a drunken mistake on the Internet seems too harsh to me.

All you kiddies out there.... solicit a paper on the Internet, and this could be you. But you might not get that second chance.
