geographically challenged bloggers

So my brother blogged about the El Reno Blog the other day.

I was born and grew up in El Reno, and I take a casual interest in the happenings in Canadian County since our parents still live there (and own a pretty valuable piece of property, directly across U.S. 81 from the Lucky Star Casino on the Cheyenne-Arapaho reservation). But I got the flu last week, and haven't looked at any news or blogs since last Monday. Today I got to the El Reno Blog for the first time.

Matt said that this blog is rather enthusiastic in its praise of my hometown, and he's right. The author moved to El Reno from Florida, or so he states, and started the blog to have a place to 'point with pride' and to 'offer constructive suggestions.'

Hey, dude - I've got a suggestion. Take a geography class - or at least learn where you are when you take pictures.

Go ahead and click on the headline URL, where you'll see a nice photo of a Love's convenience store at the intersection of State Highways 66 and 92. Nice picture, isn't it? Only one small problem - that intersection is in Yukon, 14 miles east of El Reno. State Highway 92 is now called Garth Brooks Boulevard, because Yukon claims Garth Brooks as its 'favorite son' or something like that. (Hey, I'm from El Reno, and we firmly believe that nothing good ever came from Yukon.)

You can also see a 'Main St.' sign on the light overhang - that's a big clue, because El Reno doesn't have a Main Street! Highway 66 in El Reno is Rock Island Avenue (although it turns into Sunset when the road turns west again) and I promise that's true because my dad's El Reno store was at 301 South Rock Island, and my uncle's store is at 320 West Main Street in Yukon. (The Yukon store is still there, but the El Reno store was destroyed in 1987 by an ice storm.) This blogger has lived in El Reno for two full years and doesn't know there's no Main Street? Does he just go to Wal-Mart and the Sizzlin' Sirloin and never go east of Country Club Road??

Putting up a blog dedicated to the promotion of El Reno and then loading it with pictures of Yukon is like a Sooner blog with pictures of Bevo. Please, dear El Reno blogger - take the pictures down, replace them with real pictures of El Reno, or get off the damn Internet. You're pissing me off.

UPDATE: Matt tells me that the Sirloin Stockade (I called it the Sizzlin' Sirloin, but remember, I've still got a 101 degree fever) closed in December. So substitute 'Hensley's' for 'Sirloin' and carry on.

UPDATE II: Yeah, I know Hensley's isn't there anymore, but the motel is still there and it's across the road from where the Sirloin Stockade was. My point is that if you're going to put up a picture of El Reno, make sure it's in El Reno.
